Managed in the past by fulltime and part-time Sports Coaches and other voluntary Coaches, boys and girls’ from different age groups and abilities are coached in a variety of sports including; Volleyball, Basketball, Table Tennis, Soccer, etc and are then entered into various leagues and competitions. A variety of fitness classes are also available to members on a weekly basis. The youth club has also represented the North East Inner City in the Annual Community games events and has won several Dublin titles in recent years. Encouraging young people to participate in sporting activity has the added benefit of promoting a healthier lifestyle while issues such as obesity and diabetes are on the increase. Sporting activity has always been a popular pastime throughout the History of the club and members have excelled in the areas of boxing, soccer and table tennis. Indeed Belvedere football club which is a well known Dublin soccer club started off as a section within our youth club and is now a very successful club in its own right.
Our afternoon sporting activity is currently managed by some of our community employment staff who run a varied programme of activities tailored to the needs and abilities of our members. Long shots, world cup, 5-a-side soccer matches, tails and long jump competitions are just some of the games that keep our members interested on a daily basis. Most Friday afternoons also sees a community development officer from the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) delivering Futsal programmes to help develop the soccer skills of the children who take part.
An Annual soccer mini league competition has been run in the club for a number of years and recently we have linked up with the transition year students from Belvedere College who have a three Month placement in the club each year. Each team now has a transition year student playing alongside members of the club which makes for a more enjoyable experience for all concerned.
Volunteer sports coaches help to run our evening time drop-in sports section and we are always looking for extra help to staff one of our three club nights.
